"Swine Flu Vaccine Side Effects Mild, Say Researchers"

Separate studies by researchers from the United Kingdom and Australia on
the efficacy and safety of two vaccines for swine flu - both using the same
strain of the virus and standard manufacturing processes used for seasonal
flu vaccines but each made by a different company--show that about 75
percent of people receiving the vaccines in trials had produced antibodies
to the swine flu virus within 21 days after receiving a single dose of the
vaccine. In the U.K. study, which compared 1 dose with 2 doses, people had
higher levels of antibodies if they received both doses, but most people
had some level of protection within 14 days after the first dose. No
serious side effects were reported in either study. Common side effects
were those you'd expect from seasonal flu vaccine, including pain where the
vaccine was injected and muscle aches or headaches. A swine flu vaccine
will likely to be approved by the European Medicines Agency in October.
The U.K. government has said that people who are usually offered seasonal
flu vaccine due to their age or health problems will be given priority when
the vaccine arrives. Pregnant women may also be given priority, as long as
safety testing shows the vaccine is safe for use during pregnancy.
